The Importance of Safety when working in the heat

Sun and heat safety might seem obvious when relaxing at the beach or by the pool. However, one area many people find trouble when it comes to hot weather is working in it. On a busy day, It is easy to become focused on the job and disregard the sun beating down on you.

The risks of not practicing safety measures when working in the heat can go from minimal to life-threatening quickly. According to the?National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, heat stroke is the most serious heat-related disorder and occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature. The body temperature can rise to 106 degrees Fahrenheit or higher within 10 to 15 minutes and can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided.? Other more mild heat-related illnesses, such as heat rash or heat exhaustion are still a cause for concern and can impact a person for multiple days or even weeks.

It is for this reason, important to be mindful and follow simple heat safety steps that might seem obvious, but we often ignore or overlook at work. The following simple steps can save you from extreme discomfort or even life-threatening illness:

  1. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids; drink about 16 ounces before starting and 5 to 7 ounces every 15 or 20 minutes.

  1. Avoid dehydrating liquids.?Alcohol, coffee, tea, and caffeinated soft drinks can hurt more than help.

  1. Wear protective clothing.?Lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing helps protect against heat. Change clothing if it gets completely saturated.
